From the time you open your eyes in the morning until your head hits the pillow later that same night, you are exposed to a whole plethora of irritants, chemicals and food temptations that can cause neck pain. You probably never gave many of these things a second thought.

As you read through this article, you’ll probably think to yourself “this is ridiculous. There are just too many things on the list to try to avoid.” And, you’d be absolutely right.

The whole point of this diatribe is to open your eyes to all of the unhealthy things we are exposed to on a daily basis. It is virtually impossible to avoid all of them. But, as they say, knowledge is power. The more things we discuss today that you can avoid, the better you will probably feel.

I know some of you will skim down this article and just blow the whole thing off. That’s your choice. But, if you have chronic neck pain and just aren’t getting the help you need, this article can help make a significant difference in your pain level. I hope you will keep reading. WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE AND NOT A DROP TO DRINK

I bet you never think about the water you drink. After all, just turn on the faucet and you get all you want on the cheap. Or, maybe you’re one of those who buys cases of plastic bottled water and think you’re getting something healthy.

Not! Tap water is regulated by your local water department to be acceptably clean. That means it meets a rather low ball government standard for bacteria and certain chemicals. Bottled water has even less regulation. That standard, and your water utility, do not even begin to filter out the drugs that people pee and poop out which end up back in your drinking water. Add in pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, perchlorate (rocket fuel!) and hexavalent chromium (The stuff Erin Brockovich fought to get out of the water). And, oh yes, don’t forget that chlorine and fluoride are deliberately dumped into the water!

Do you really think any of that stuff is good for you. I would like to “pull rank” here, since I am a dentist and discuss fluoride. I believe that if you understand how bad it is for you, you will understand why all the other noxious chemicals in your water are a problem too.

Fluoride chemically is known as an extremely strong oxidant. If you put hydrofluoric acid in a glass bottle, it will eat away the bottle! You need to use special plastic bottles to hold it.

During my dental education, I was told that fluoride was as safe as mother’s milk. It would help prevent cavities. It would make your gums healthier. This is the numbskull mindset of the American Dental Association to this day! They are stuck in the 1960’s.

The truth is that fluoride has no known use in the human body. There is scant evidence that it MAY help reduce cavities slightly when applied directly to your teeth. There is no evidence whatsoever that swallowing fluoride prevents cavities.

In fact, too much fluoride swallowed causes fluorosis, which is a mottling on the tooth enamel and actually weakens the tooth. So what does this have to do with causing pain? Plenty…

Fluoride causes the following problems:

  • Osteosarcoma (bone cancer)
  • Calcification of connective tissue, like tendons and ligaments
  • Lowered IQ’s (duh)
  • Kills the good bacteria in your gut, which compromises your immune system
  • Reduces the function of your thyroid gland, affecting your hormones and reducing your immune system function.
  • Causes Osteophytes (bony projections) to form along your spinal cord which leads to bone spur pain.

So, what do you think adding all those other chemicals in on top of fluoride does to your body? It totally screws up the works, causing inflammation and pain. The remedy – buy a reverse osmosis filter available at most hardware stores.

BAD FATS

Open your kitchen cupboards and take a look bottles of:

*Cottonseed Oil

*Canola Oil

*Corn Oil

*Soy Oil

*Rice Oil

*Peanut Oil

*Vegetable oil

Found them? Good! Now…throw them out! Why? They are all high in Omega-6 fatty acids. Your body usually needs a ratio of 1 part Omega-6 to 3 parts Omega-3. Eating these oils raises the ratio to 20:1 for the average American. Omega-6 oils are proinflammatory and cause pain. The solution: use butter (yes, butter), olive oil and coconut oil and occasionally you can splurge with avocado oil.

SALT? YES, SALT CAUSES PAIN

The wrong kind of salt, that is. Probably the kind you’re using right now…white table salt. This junk is cooked at over 1000 degrees and is heavily processed. They add iodine to prevent goiters. They add anti-caking and flow agents to make it come out of the shaker nice and pretty. It contains sodium, chlorine and iodine…that’s it. Only about 10% of the iodine is absorbed by your body so it’s not a very good source. Sodium causes water retention which leads to inflammation, which leads to pain. Chlorine was discussed above with water if you need to refresh your memory.

The solution is to use Celtic Sea Salt or, even better, Himalayan Pink Crystal Salt. Both offer about 80 minerals and are naturally occurring salts with minimal processing. They are healthy for you and will not cause high blood pressure (as your doctor preaches) or inflammation and pain.

NON-ORGANIC FOODS

Foods that is raised traditionally are sprayed with many chemicals usually including glyphosate (Roundup). The Roundup is known to kill the good bacteria in the human gut, which leads to immune system problems and pain. Not to mention many non-organic foods are GMO (genetically modified organisms) which are poorly digested and often cause pain. Interesting, cattle and pigs given the choice of GMO vs non-GMO food instinctively go for the more natural food.

Here’s the solution. Go to EWG.org and look for “Clean 15” and the “Dirty Dozen”. This tells you which foods to buy organically and which you can save a few bucks and buy traditionally.

CANNED FOODS

The lining of almost all cans contains a chemical called bisPhenol A (BPA). BPA was removed from baby bottles and teething rings a few years ago over health concerns for the newborn. It was replaced by something called BPS which is just as toxic! Anyway, BPA is a chemical that mimics estrogen in the body. It fuels tumors to turn cancerous as well as making you fat and lowering testosterone in both men and women. Yes, women have testosterone too, just much less than men. One other effect of BPA: inflammation and pain.

The solution: buy frozen fruits and vegetables whenever possible and try to make them organic.

KITCHEN POTS, PANS, UTENSILS STORAGE ITEMS AND HIDDEN CHEMICALS

Teflon cookware was all the rage a few years ago. A lot of it is still around. The Teflon itself is an organic compound that contains fluoride. When heated to a high temperature, the fluoride leaches from the cookware to your food, and as explained above, this causes pain. At lower temperatures, there is still some transfer of the nonstick coating to your food which indirectly leads to pain.

Take a look around your house for:

  • Plastic Bags
  • Tupperware
  • Plastic bottles
  • Nylon Utensils (Spatulas, spoons, etc.)
  • Air Freshener Plug Ins
  • Microwave popcorn
  • Fabric Softener
  • Toothpaste with fluoride

Realize that anything plastic is made from crude oil. You should never microwave any kind of plastic! This causes massive amounts of the plastic’s chemicals to be transferred to your food. Microwave popcorn always smells so good, but is so bad for you for this very reason.

The Solution: Buy cast iron or stainless steel cookware and utensils. Go “nose blind” and don’t use Febreze (it’s all artificial, which means more chemicals). Try essential oils like peppermint and sweet orange instead. Make your own toothpaste with baking soda plus salt and enough 3% hydrogen peroxide to make a paste, just like Grandma did. Use a hot air corn popper. And, add a little vinegar in the dryer to get clothes soft without the chemicals. Also try to store food in glass or stainless steel containers.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, SUGAR

Everyone knows that if you eat too much sugar, you get fat. How’s that for inflammation and pain? It’s more than just the added calories. Sugar makes you blood sugar jump higher. Your pancreas then releases insulin to bring blood sugar back down. The Yo-Yo effect on your blood sugar throws everything out of whack, which leads to inflammation and pain.

What about Artificial Sweeteners? They are definitely not the solution. They still cause your blood sugar to bounce around and wreak havoc with your body. Aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet) breaks down to formaldehyde (embalming fluid), methanol (wood alcohol), formic acid (paint stripper) and phenylalanine (toxic to some individuals). Does that sound healthy? In addition, Aspartame kills the good bacteria in your gut, which compromises your immune system and eventually leads to pain.

The Solution: Use honey or Stevia.
